Old State House Museum

The Old State House is Arkansas's original statehouse, built between 1833 and 1842 in Greek Revival style. It is the oldest surviving state capitol building west of the Mississippi and one of the finest antebellum public buildings in the South. The building served as the state capitol until 1912, when the current capitol was completed, and has been a museum since 1947.

The permanent collection covers Arkansas political history with genuine depth — the exhibits on Reconstruction, the constitutional convention, and the Delta blues are all worth time. The location in the River Market District makes it an easy stop alongside the Clinton Center.

Free admission. Open Tuesday through Saturday, and Sunday afternoons. 300 W. Markham St.

A story
Bill Clinton delivered his election-night victory speeches here in 1992 and 1996. The building also served as the site of a celebrated brawl in 1837 when two Arkansas congressmen got into a knife fight on the floor of the House. The knife is on display.
