Sacramento's most historically significant African-American neighbourhood, south of downtown, undergoing a slow creative revival after decades of disinvestment. Oak Park was a thriving community in the early twentieth century, home to Sacramento's African American business district and cultural institutions, before urban renewal in the 1960s and 70s displaced much of its population. The neighbourhood is now a mix of longtime residents, artists, and new restaurants.
The 40 Acres cultural arts complex is the centre of the neighbourhood's current renaissance. The stretch of Broadway through Oak Park has independent restaurants and galleries that repay exploration. The neighbourhood's Victorian houses, many undergoing renovation, show what Sacramento's residential architecture looked like before the mid-century suburban expansion.
