Tower Theatre

A 1938 Streamline Moderne cinema at the corner of Broadway and Land Park Drive in the Tower neighbourhood, now operating as a live music and events venue. The building has the characteristic sleek horizontals and vertical fin tower of Depression-era commercial modernism, and its marquee lights up the Broadway corridor at night.

The Tower neighbourhood around it — sometimes called the Broadway District — is one of Sacramento's more characterful commercial streets: independent restaurants, used bookshops, the Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op, and several small galleries occupy a strip of mid-century buildings that has so far resisted the chain-store pressures affecting similar neighbourhoods elsewhere. The Theatre itself programmes everything from comedy to concerts to film screenings.

A story
The Tower Theatre anchors the intersection of Land Park Drive and Broadway that gave Tower Records — founded in Sacramento in 1960 — its name. The record shop that would become the world's largest music retailer started directly across the street from this theatre; the theatre's clock tower is in Tower Records' original logo.
