Golden 1 Center

The home arena of the Sacramento Kings NBA team, opened in 2016 in the heart of downtown Sacramento. The building was designed by AECOM with a perforated facade that allows natural breezes to cool the interior — a practical adaptation to Sacramento's extreme summer heat that also creates an unusual translucent quality at night when the building is lit from within.

Even non-sports fans can appreciate the arena's impact on downtown Sacramento. The surrounding Entertainment and Sports Complex (DOCO) has reinvigorated several blocks that were virtually abandoned in the 1990s and 2000s. The arena hosts concerts as well as Kings games, and the surrounding district has become a centre of Sacramento nightlife.

A story
Golden 1 Center, opened in 2016, was designed to LEED Platinum standards and is powered largely by solar energy generated in the Sacramento Valley — it is the first indoor arena in the world to achieve this certification. The building's most remarkable environmental feature is invisible from outside: it uses 100 percent local renewable energy, drawing partly on a direct contract with a solar farm in the Central Valley.
