McKinley Park

A large Victorian-era park in the East Sacramento neighbourhood, featuring a rose garden, duck pond, tennis courts, and a branch of the Sacramento Public Library in a 1930s WPA-era building. McKinley Park is the neighbourhood anchor for East Sacramento's residential streets, and on summer evenings and weekend mornings the paths are full of joggers, dog walkers, and families.

The rose garden, planted in the 1920s, is one of Sacramento's most pleasant small spaces — shaded by mature trees, with benches placed for sitting among the roses. The Library is one of the oldest Carnegie libraries in California, still operating and worth a look inside. The park is a good example of how Sacramento's grid of neighbourhood parks functions as a distributed green infrastructure.

A story
McKinley Park was named for President William McKinley after his assassination in 1901, making it one of the earliest American public spaces to bear his name. The park's rose garden, planted in the 1920s, contains over 1,200 rose bushes and is at its peak from April through June — when it attracts more visitors than any other single spot in East Sacramento.
