Hayes Valley

A gritty freeway corridor turned chic, walkable pocket of shops and bars

Hayes Valley is a masterclass in urban revitalisation. For decades it sat in the shadow of the Central Freeway, a noisy, run-down corridor west of the Civic Center. When the freeway was damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and finally torn down, the neighbourhood was transformed almost overnight into one of the most desirable small pockets in the city — proof of what removing an elevated highway can do.

Today it is compact, flat, and intensely walkable. Hayes Street is the spine, lined with independent boutiques, mid-century design shops, coffee roasters, wine bars, cocktail lounges, and an excellent restaurant scene that includes long-runners like Absinthe. At its centre, Patricia's Green — the park created on the old freeway land — hosts rotating public art and the container-style cafés of the Proxy project. The SFJAZZ Center on the eastern edge adds serious cultural weight. Come to browse, eat, and drink at an unhurried pace.
