Grateful Dead House

The Victorian where the Grateful Dead lived during the Summer of Love

Address 710 Ashbury St

The purple-trimmed Victorian at 710 Ashbury Street is where the Grateful Dead lived communally from 1966 to 1968, at the height of the Haight's psychedelic moment. It became a hub of the scene, and in October 1967 made headlines when police raided it and arrested several band members and associates on drug charges — a media event the band turned to their advantage with a defiant press conference.

It is a private residence, so admire it from the pavement and keep the noise down out of respect for whoever lives there now. Fans still make the pilgrimage, and the block has a few other rock landmarks nearby — Janis Joplin lived a short walk away. It is a quick, atmospheric stop on any walking tour of the neighbourhood's counterculture history.
