Dutch Windmill

Restored 1903 windmill that pumped water to transform sand dunes into Golden Gate Park

Address 1691 John F. Kennedy Dr, Golden Gate Park

At the far western edge of Golden Gate Park, near Ocean Beach, a full-sized Dutch windmill stands surrounded by the Queen Wilhelmina Tulip Garden. Built in 1903, it was one of two windmills that pumped groundwater to irrigate the park in its early years -- before the windmills, the western half of the park was nothing but sand dunes.

The windmill was restored in 2011 and is now purely decorative, but it is a beautiful structure and the tulip garden around it blazes with colour in spring. Its companion, the Murphy Windmill, stands a short walk south and is still awaiting full restoration. Both are best visited as part of a longer walk through the western end of the park or combined with a trip to Ocean Beach.

A story
Golden Gate Park was built on sand dunes so barren that critics called the project impossible. These windmills pumped the groundwater that irrigated the plantings, literally turning desert into park.
