Alamo Square

Iconic Painted Ladies Victorians against the city skyline

Address Steiner St & Hayes St

Alamo Square is home to the famous Painted Ladies -- a row of Victorian houses on Steiner Street that you have almost certainly seen in photos, postcards, and the Full House opening credits. The view from the grassy hillside across the street, with the pastel Victorians framed against the downtown skyline, is one of San Francisco's most iconic. It is a bit of a walk from other major sights, but the photo opportunity is worth it.

Head up in the morning or late afternoon for the best light. The park itself is a pleasant neighborhood green with tennis courts and a playground. A note of caution: the surrounding blocks downhill can be rough around the edges, so exercise common sense after dark.
