The Honolulu Zoo occupies 42 acres at the Diamond Head end of Kapiolani Park, making it one of the few zoos in the world within walking distance of a famous beach. The zoo is best known for its African Savanna section — one of the most naturalistic African exhibits in the United States, with giraffes, elephants, rhinoceroses, and zebras roaming a large open habitat.
The zoo also has a good collection of tropical birds, reptiles, and primates. The Hawaiian section covers the island's endemic wildlife, including nene (Hawaiian geese) and the Hawaiian monk seal. Wednesday evening concerts (Wildest Show in Town) draw locals with picnic blankets and lawn chairs. A good option for families or anyone who wants to spend a morning outside the beach/shopping circuit.
