Iolani Palace is the only royal residence on United States territory. Built in 1882 by King David Kalakaua in an American Florentine style, it had electricity before the White House did. The palace served as the royal residence until Queen Liliuokalani was overthrown in 1893 by a group of American businessmen backed by US Marines.
After the overthrow, the building was used as the capitol of the provisional government and later the Territory and State of Hawaii until 1969. It was restored in the 1970s and opened as a museum. Guided and self-guided audio tours take you through the throne room, the state dining room, and the upper-floor bedrooms. The basement gallery holds the crown jewels and royal regalia. Allow about an hour for the visit.
