The Tantalus-Round Top Drive is a 13-kilometre loop through the rainforest above Honolulu, accessible by car from the city. The road climbs from Makiki through dense forest to the Pu'u 'Ualaka'a State Wayside, where a short walk brings you to a lookout with one of the best elevated views of Honolulu — the entire city spread below, with Diamond Head and the ocean to the south and the interior mountains to the north.
The drive takes about 45 minutes without stops. The Makiki Forest Recreation Area at the base of the loop has hiking trails through the forest. The road is narrow and one-way in sections; drive slowly. Worth doing in the late afternoon when the light falls across the city below.
