Kawaiahaʻo Church

Known as the "Westminster Abbey of Hawaii," this coral-block church completed in 1842 is the oldest Christian church on the islands. Its construction required divers to harvest thousands of coral slabs from offshore reefs. Hawaiian royalty worshipped here, and the church hosted coronations, funerals, and state events throughout the Kingdom era. Services are still held in both Hawaiian and English, and the Sunday morning service with Hawaiian hymns is a moving experience. The surrounding grounds contain a cemetery with the graves of missionaries and Hawaiian nobility. The building sits across from Iolani Palace, making it easy to pair with a visit to the palace grounds.
