Ala Moana sits between downtown Honolulu and Waikiki, anchored by the Ala Moana Center — the world's largest open-air shopping mall, with over 350 stores and restaurants. For visitors this is less about shopping than geography: the centre serves as the main transit hub for Oahu's bus network, and virtually every route connects here.
Across the road from the mall, Ala Moana Beach Park is a local favourite — a long, calm beach on a protected lagoon popular with swimmers and stand-up paddleboarders. The Magic Island peninsula at the western end is a popular evening walk. The neighbourhood's restaurants, particularly around Ward Avenue, are a notch above the tourist strip.
