Fells Point is where Baltimore actually lives. This historic waterfront neighbourhood was founded in the 1730s and became one of the most important shipbuilding centres in colonial America — the fast, manoeuvrable Chesapeake Bay Clipper was designed and built here. Today the cobblestone streets, brick rowhouses, and warren of bars and restaurants make it the most atmospheric neighbourhood in the city.
Broadway is the main artery, running from the waterfront market at its southern end up through the neighbourhood. The Saturday farmers market at the Broadway pier is one of the city's best. In the evenings, the string of bars on Thames Street and the surrounding blocks fills with a mix of locals, tourists, and the kind of people who have been coming to the same stool for thirty years. Fells Point is where to stay and where to spend evenings in Baltimore.
