Great Blacks in Wax

Great Blacks in Wax is one of Baltimore's most unusual museums, using life-size wax figures to tell African American history from the slave trade through civil rights, politics, science, culture, and everyday life. The tone is direct, and some galleries are deliberately hard to look at, especially the scenes dealing with enslavement and racial violence.

It is not a slick museum, but it is memorable and serious about its subject. Visitors should allow time to move slowly through the galleries, and families with younger children may want to prepare them for the more disturbing sections before entering.
