Maryland Zoo

The Maryland Zoo in Druid Hill Park is one of the oldest zoos in the United States and has undergone significant renovation in recent decades. The African Journey section, which simulates a savanna environment, is the highlight — well-designed habitat for lions, giraffes, zebras, and other large African mammals. The penguin exhibit is also excellent.

The zoo occupies a substantial portion of Druid Hill Park and requires comfortable walking shoes and a few hours. It is primarily a family destination but adults without children will find it worth the visit for the African section in particular. In summer, arrive early to see the large animals before the heat makes them inactive.

A story
The Maryland Zoo was founded in 1876, making it the third oldest zoo in the United States. It was originally created as part of Druid Hill Park's design, with animals donated by private citizens as a public amenity. The zoo's penguin colony, established in 1967, is one of the most successful in the Western Hemisphere and has helped develop techniques for maintaining African penguins in captivity that are now used by zoos worldwide.
