Crown Center

Hallmark's mixed-use development with a free ice rink in winter

Crown Center is a large mixed-use complex developed by Hallmark Cards — whose world headquarters is on the site — in the southern part of downtown. The complex includes hotels, restaurants, shops, a science museum for children (Wonderscope), and the Hallmark Visitors Center, which offers a behind-the-scenes look at the history of America's most famous greeting card company and holds a small collection of Dalí paintings (Hallmark commissioned art from Dalí in the 1950s for a series of Christmas cards).

In winter, Crown Center installs a free outdoor ice skating rink — one of the busiest in the city. The underground connection to Union Station, just to the south, means you can walk between them without going outside. Crown Center feels a bit corporate-mall-ish compared to the more independent neighborhoods, but the Hallmark museum is genuinely interesting and the Union Station connection makes it a practical hub for a downtown circuit.
