TWA Museum

Airlines history museum in the city that was once TWA's world headquarters

Trans World Airlines had its world headquarters in Kansas City for most of its existence, and the TWA Museum preserves the golden age of that airline in a former downtown airport terminal. The collection covers TWA's history from its 1926 founding through its 2001 absorption by American Airlines, with particular focus on the glamorous decades of the 1950s and 1960s when air travel was aspirational and TWA was the airline of Hollywood and international business.

The museum holds uniforms, menus, cabin furnishings, route maps, aircraft models, and an extraordinary archive of photographs. A Concorde nose cone on display is particularly striking. The museum is run by volunteers and alumni of the airline, and the passion shows in the quality of the curation. It is small but absorbing, especially for anyone interested in design, aviation, or mid-century American business history.
