Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden

Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden sits on the edge of the Reed College campus in the Eastmoreland neighbourhood, surrounding a spring-fed lake that attracts year-round waterfowl including wood ducks, herons, and Canada geese. The garden is well designed at any time of year, but the April–May rhododendron bloom is the peak experience — the lake's reflections and the density of the plantings make it one of Portland's most photographed spots during spring.

Admission is free from September through February; a small fee applies during the peak bloom season (roughly mid-March through Labor Day in September). The garden is managed by the American Rhododendron Society in partnership with Portland Parks. Access is from SE 28th Avenue; the nearest MAX station is Woodstock (Green Line), about a 20-minute walk.

A story
Crystal Springs is fed by a natural spring that keeps the lake at a near-constant 50°F year-round, creating a micro-climate ideal for waterfowl. The garden surrounds the lake on the grounds of Reed College, and the blooming season in late April and May draws thousands of visitors for what is considered one of the finest rhododendron displays in the Pacific Northwest. Over 2,500 specimens represent more than 600 named varieties.
