Washington Park is Portland's great west-side green space, a wooded hill park that gathers several of the city's best attractions into one spread-out landscape. The Japanese Garden, International Rose Test Garden, Hoyt Arboretum, Oregon Zoo, and World Forestry Center all sit within or beside it, linked by paths, roads, and shuttle stops.
It is worth coming even if you skip the ticketed sights. Trails cut through deep trees and ravines, memorials appear in quiet corners, and the higher viewpoints look back toward downtown and Mount Hood. Bring a map or use the park shuttle, because the distances and slopes are bigger than they first look.
