Portland Art Museum

Portland's main art museum occupies two connected buildings on the South Park Blocks, a strip of tree-lined parkway that runs through the university district. The collection spans 50 centuries and includes European and American painting, Northwest Coast Indigenous art, Japanese art, decorative arts, and a large photography and media archive. The Native American collection is particularly notable and is presented in close collaboration with tribal cultural authorities.

The Jubitz Center for Modern and Contemporary Art holds works from the mid-20th century to the present, with strong holdings in Pacific Northwest artists. The museum runs the Northwest Film Center on the same campus, with regular screenings of independent, foreign, and classic films. Closed Mondays; Thursday evenings have reduced admission.

A story
The Portland Art Museum opened in 1892, making it the oldest art museum on the Pacific Coast. Its collection of Northwest Coast Native American art is considered one of the finest anywhere — assembled not by purchase but largely through relationships with tribal communities over more than a century. The museum also owns a major collection of Japanese prints and a strong European holdings that include a Monet, a Renoir, and several Rodin sculptures.
