Lan Su Chinese Garden

Lan Su Chinese Garden occupies a full city block in the Old Town Chinatown neighbourhood, enclosed by a high wall that cuts out the street noise entirely once you step inside. The design follows the tradition of Suzhou scholar gardens: a central lake surrounded by interlocking pavilions, covered walkways, rock formations (the stones were imported from Lake Tai in Jiangsu province), and layered plantings of bamboo, pine, and flowering trees.

The garden is best in spring when the magnolias and wisteria are in bloom, and in autumn for the turning maples. The teahouse in the Tower of Cosmic Reflections pavilion serves traditional Chinese teas and light snacks. Entry requires an admission fee; guided tours are included with admission. Open daily.

A story
The garden was built in 1999–2000 by a team of 65 artisans from Suzhou, Portland's Chinese sister city, who spent months constructing the pavilions, bridges, and rock arrangements using traditional techniques and materials. All the decorative elements — the carved woodwork, the patterned courtyard paving, the lattice windows — were designed and made in Suzhou before being shipped to Portland. The garden is named Lan Su, which combines the characters for Suzhou (苏) and Portland (兰).
