Oregon Symphony

The Oregon Symphony performs at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall on SW Broadway from September through May. The full season includes classical subscription concerts, chamber performances, pops programmes, and special collaborations. The orchestra has around 75 full-time musicians and plays about 100 concerts per season.

Rush tickets at reduced prices are often available on the day of performance; student discounts are also available. The Schnitzer Hall itself is worth attending for the restored 1928 interior as much as the music. Oregon Symphony concerts are broadcast on Oregon Public Broadcasting, and the organisation has a strong history of educational and community outreach programmes.

A story
The Oregon Symphony was founded in 1896, making it one of the oldest symphony orchestras west of the Mississippi River. It came close to folding several times in the 20th century, most critically in 1980 when it was on the verge of bankruptcy, but survived through a combination of emergency fundraising and a new music director who rebuilt its artistic profile. Under Carlos Kalmar's leadership from 2003 to 2019 it became nationally recognised, earning Grammy nominations for live recordings.
