National Park Mountain

National Park Mountain rises near Madison Junction, in the lava-flow country of western Yellowstone. The mountain is tied to the Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition of 1870, whose campfire stories helped build the legend around the creation of the national park idea.

The claim that the park was first proposed here is more legend than proven history, but the stop still gives useful context for early Yellowstone exploration. It is best treated as a short historical and landscape stop while travelling through the Madison area.
