The hottest and most dynamic thermal basin in Yellowstone, and arguably the most interesting after the Upper Geyser Basin. The Porcelain Basin section is an open expanse of pale mineral-encrusted ground dotted with geysers, vents, and boiling pools; the Back Basin is more wooded, with larger features including Steamboat Geyser — the world's tallest active geyser, which erupts unpredictably but spectacularly to heights of over 300 feet when it does go. The museum here is worth twenty minutes for context on how the volcanic system works.
