Yellowstone's Petrified Tree is an ancient redwood preserved in stone near the Lost Lake trailhead. It is one of the easiest places in the park to see the fossil forests that are better known from Specimen Ridge.
The stop is short, but it gives a clear look at Yellowstone's volcanic past beyond geysers and hot springs. It works well as a quick detour while exploring the northern part of the park.
