Dique do Tororó

Artificial lake with the floating orixá sculptures

A 110,000 square metre artificial lake just inland from the Arena Fonte Nova stadium, with eight enormous brightly painted statues of candomblé orixás appearing to float on the water. The figures — Iemanjá, Oxum, Oxalá, Xangô, and others — were installed in 1998 by the artist Tatti Moreno and are individually moored in the lake.

The lakefront path is busy with joggers in the morning and walkers in the evening. The view at sunset, with the figures backlit against the sky, is one of the more striking secular sights in Salvador.

A story
The Dique was created in the 16th century by the Portuguese for fresh water and to protect the city's flank from inland attacks. The eight floating fibreglass sculptures by Tatti Moreno, each representing a different candomblé orixá, were installed in 1998 and have become one of Salvador's most recognised images.
