At the northern edge of the Pelourinho, the Carmelite convent and church complex marks the high point of the district. The church has the standard baroque richness, but the standout is the adjacent convent's chapel, with its 1700 figure of the dead Christ by the enslaved sculptor Francisco Manuel das Chagas — one of the finest pieces of Brazilian colonial sculpture.
The convent is also a small museum; the cloister is one of the most peaceful corners of the Pelourinho.
