Mosteiro de São Bento

Working Benedictine monastery with Gregorian chant

A Benedictine monastery on the western edge of the Pelourinho, founded in 1581 and rebuilt in the 18th century. It is one of the few major religious buildings in Salvador with a continuously functioning monastic community, and the daily mass at 6pm with Gregorian chant is the easiest way to experience it.

The church interior is heavily gilded baroque, the sacristy contains valuable colonial silver, and the small museum off the cloister is worth a quiet half hour.
