The city's main concert hall and theatre, in a modernist 1958 building on Praça Dois de Julho between the Pelourinho and Barra. The 1,500-seat main auditorium hosts the Orquestra Sinfônica da Bahia, the city's ballet, and visiting national and international acts; the open-air Concha Acústica behind hosts large pop and MPB concerts.
Check the programme; in any given week the Castro Alves usually has something worth seeing. A good break from the historic-centre routine.
