Catedral San Carlos Borromeo

Mestizo-baroque cathedral on the Plaza de Armas, finished in 1757

The standout building in Puno, completed in 1757 and one of the finest mestizo-baroque facades in southern Peru. The carved stonework on the front — pale volcanic stone against the high altiplano sky — is dense with religious symbols mixed with native Andean motifs: small puma heads, twisting fruit, and stylised flowers worked into the classical pilasters.

The interior is much plainer than the exterior — light walls, a relatively modest altar, a silver tabernacle. Visit during a mass to hear the cathedral organ and choir in use. Free entry; modest dress expected.

A story
The facade was carved over more than thirty years by indigenous and mestizo sculptors, weaving local symbolism — pumas, monkeys, Andean flora — into a fundamentally Spanish baroque template. The interior, by contrast, was stripped during the wars of independence and is now relatively spare.
