Jirón Lima

Puno's main pedestrian street, a busy strip of restaurants, bars, and craft stalls

The main pedestrian artery of Puno, running north from the Plaza de Armas for about six blocks. Jirón Lima is where most travellers end up in the evenings — both sides are lined with restaurants, pizzerias, alpaca-wool shops, agencies selling boat trips to Uros, and small bars selling pisco sours.

The street climbs gently uphill; with the altitude, a slow stroll from the plaza to the upper end takes longer than it looks. In the evenings, especially at weekends, brass bands set up at corners and dancers in traditional dress practise for upcoming festivals — the streets are a working part of Puno's vivid folk-music culture, not a tourist confection.
