A smaller and simpler 17th-century church one block south of the Plaza de Armas. La Merced is far less ornate than the cathedral but holds a finely worked silver altarpiece and an image of the Virgin of Mercy, a particular focus of devotion among local women.
It is normally quiet — opening hours vary, with the church often most accessible in the late afternoon around mass times. A brief stop, useful as a contrast to the cathedral's lavish facade.
