Holy Trinity Cathedral

Haile Selassie's burial place with Afewerk Tekle stained glass

The largest Ethiopian Orthodox cathedral in the city, Holy Trinity was built after the liberation from Italian occupation in 1941. Emperor Haile Selassie and Empress Menen are buried here. The stained glass windows by Afewerk Tekle, one of Ethiopia's most celebrated artists, are stunning. The grounds also contain the graves of resistance fighters and a small museum.

A story
The British officer Major General Orde Wingate, who organised the Gideon Force that helped restore Emperor Haile Selassie to the throne in 1941, is buried in the cathedral grounds — an unusual honour for a foreigner in one of Ethiopia's most sacred churches. Haile Selassie himself attended the funeral and requested the burial here.
