Built in 1896 to commemorate Ethiopia's victory over Italy at the Battle of Adwa, this octagonal church is one of the most important in the country. The interior is richly decorated with paintings and stained glass. Remove your shoes before entering. The small museum next door holds battle clothing and weapons from the Italian wars, plus examples of traditional Ethiopian religious art. Visitors are welcome to stay for services, where the chanting in Ge'ez, the ancient liturgical language, is hauntingly beautiful.
