Sheger Park

Riverside promenade and park connecting central Addis along the Little Akaki river

Opened in 2020, Sheger Park is Addis Ababa's most ambitious public space project in decades. The park runs for several kilometres along the Little Akaki River, transforming what was a polluted, inaccessible riverbank into a landscaped promenade with walking paths, playgrounds, fountains, and outdoor amphitheatres.

The park is most lively on weekend mornings and evenings, when families, joggers, and groups of young people fill the walkways. The central section near Meskel Square includes the Yekatit 12 Monument commemorating the 1937 Italian massacre of Ethiopians. For visitors staying in the Bole or central areas, a walk along Sheger Park gives a sense of the city's aspirations and the public life of ordinary Addis residents.
