Jewish Cemetery

Hillside Sephardic cemetery with views across the strait

The Sephardic Jewish cemetery occupies a steeply sloped hillside above the medina, with white marble tombs spread down toward the sea and the strait beyond. The site dates from the 19th-century revival of the Tangier Jewish community, which at its 1948 peak counted around 20,000 members — a substantial fraction of the city's total population — and produced a significant cultural and commercial elite.

After the founding of Israel and Moroccan independence, the community emigrated almost entirely and now numbers in the dozens. The cemetery survives as one of the most evocative physical reminders of the international era. The caretaker at the gate accepts a modest tip; visitors are asked to dress modestly and (for men) to cover their heads. The view across the strait toward Spain is one of the best in the city.
