The hilltop mansion that the eccentric British journalist Walter Burton Harris built between 1895 and 1900 on a cliff above the bay east of central Tangier. Harris was the Times correspondent in Morocco from 1888 until his death in 1933 and one of the most colourful members of the international zone's pre-protectorate cast. His house mixes English manor-house bones with Moorish courtyards, Andalusi tile, and views straight across the strait.
After serving variously as a private residence and a sports club, the villa was acquired by the foundation of King Mohammed VI and opened in 2020 as a museum of the Tangier modernist movement, with rotating exhibitions and a permanent collection of 20th-century Moroccan art. The gardens and the cliff-top terrace alone justify the visit. About 8 km east of central Tangier; taxi or grand taxi access.
