Bronze Age Shanxi (Shanxi Museum Focus)

The Bronze Age galleries of the Shanxi Museum are worth treating as a separate visit even for those who have already seen the museum's general collection. The material comes from the Jin-state tombs excavated in the Houma and Tianma-Qucun areas south of Taiyuan — aristocratic burials from roughly 1000 to 500 BCE that contained some of the most spectacular ritual bronzes, jade, and lacquerwork ever found in China.

The Jin bronzes include large wine vessels, food containers, chariot fittings, and weapons cast with inscription and decoration that represent the apex of Chinese Bronze Age metalwork. The jade assemblages from the same tombs include burial suits and ceremonial objects that predate the jade suit tradition better known from Han tombs. The curatorial text is thoughtful about what these objects meant to their original users — the rituals, the social hierarchies, the cosmological frameworks they embodied — rather than treating them as purely aesthetic objects.
