Chongshan Temple

Chongshan Temple is a Ming-dynasty Buddhist temple in the Yingze district of central Taiyuan that has been converted into a museum of Buddhist art. The main hall houses a substantial collection of Ming religious painting and embroidered Thangka-style hangings, along with clay sculptures and bronze figures from the temple's original furnishings. The hall itself — a large timber-frame structure from the early Ming period — is one of the better-preserved examples of the architecture in the city centre.

The surrounding temple courtyard is pleasant and relatively uncrowded, with old trees providing shade in the central garden. The museum functions alongside the active temple: monks maintain the religious halls while the museum galleries occupy the main ceremonial spaces. The combination of art museum and working religious institution is slightly awkward but generally handled gracefully.

A story
Chongshan Temple was built on the site of a Tang-dynasty palace. The founding Tang emperor Li Yuan, who assembled his army at Jinci before marching south, used this location as a headquarters. After the Tang collapse, the site passed through several uses before being converted to a Buddhist temple in the early Ming dynasty. The main hall's collection of Ming Buddhist sculpture and embroidered Thangka paintings from the same period are the temple's principal treasures.
