Mengshan Big Buddha

Massive restored cliff-carved Buddha south of Taiyuan, one of Shanxi's major Buddhist monuments.

The Mengshan Big Buddha is a huge cliff-carved seated Buddha in the hills south of Taiyuan. Originally created in the Northern Qi period and later damaged, it has been heavily restored, but its scale still makes the site one of the most memorable Buddhist monuments near the city.

It pairs naturally with Taiyuan's other religious and cave sites, especially Jinci and Longshan. The visit involves more travel than the central museums, but the combination of mountain setting and monumental sculpture makes it worth considering if you have a full day in the area.
