Yingze Park is the main public green space in central Taiyuan, a large formal park on the east bank of the Fen River with lakes, pavilions, and tree-lined paths that fill with locals on weekend mornings for tai chi, dancing, kite-flying, and the general sociability of Chinese urban park life. The park has no particular historical significance but gives a useful window into Taiyuan's daily rhythms — the early morning session, when the lake terraces are at their most animated, is the most interesting time to visit.
The park's central lake is crossed by stone bridges and surrounded by willows and plantings that are at their best in spring. The western end of the park connects to the Fen River embankment, where a broad promenade runs north and south through the city — an evening walk along the river, lit up with the city reflected in the water, is one of Taiyuan's more pleasant experiences.
