Wuyi Square is the main public square of Taiyuan, a large open paved area in the commercial centre flanked by government buildings and shopping centres. It functions as the city's ceremonial and civic space — flag-raising ceremonies, public events, and the daily gathering of residents that animates most Chinese city squares. The square itself is unremarkable architecturally, but it is a useful orientation point at the heart of the city grid and the hub from which the main shopping streets radiate.
The underground shopping complex below the square is substantial and worth knowing about in winter or summer, connecting several blocks of retail, food courts, and services through a network of air-conditioned passages.
