Jaigarh Fort

Forbidding military fort on the ridge above Amber, home to Asia's largest wheeled cannon

Address Devisinghpura, Amer, Jaipur
Opening Hours 9:00-16:30 daily

Jaigarh Fort sits on the ridge directly above Amber Fort, connected by a long underground passage, and was the military strongpoint that defended the entire Amber area. Where Amber is palatial and decorative, Jaigarh is strictly functional — massive walls, watchtowers, and a foundry complex where cannons were cast.

The star attraction is the Jaivana cannon, mounted on a platform with its enormous barrel pointing out over the hills. At 20 feet long and weighing about 50 tons, it is the largest wheeled cannon in the world and has never been fired in battle. The foundry itself, where it was cast, is still intact and remarkably interesting.

The views from the walls are excellent — you look down onto Amber Fort below and out over Maota Lake and the desert plains. The joint ticket with Amber Fort makes this an easy add-on. You can walk the fortified wall between the two forts.

A story
The Jaivana cannon at Jaigarh is the largest wheeled cannon ever made — an eight-ton bronze monster cast in 1720. When it was finally test-fired in the 18th century, the single shot reportedly landed 35 km away, creating a lake where it landed, though the cannon was never used in battle.
