Mubarak Mahal

Indo-Saracenic palace within the City Palace complex, now housing the textile and costume museum

Address City Palace Complex, Jaipur
Opening Hours 9:30-17:00 daily

The Mubarak Mahal ("Auspicious Palace") was built in the 1890s in an Indo-Saracenic style — a Victorian-era blend of Rajput, Mughal, and European architectural elements that was fashionable for official buildings across British India. It sits in the outer courtyard of the City Palace complex and now houses one wing of the royal textile and costume collection.

Inside are royal garments, including a silk jama (robe) weighing 5 kilograms and covered entirely in zardozi (gold thread) embroidery, reportedly belonging to Sawai Madho Singh I, who is recorded to have weighed 250 kilograms. The sheer scale of some of the royal garments is a reminder of the extraordinary excesses of the Rajput courts.

The building's architecture is itself worth examining — the latticed screens, the delicate carved stonework, and the unusual blend of styles make it one of the more interesting structures in the palace complex. Included in the City Palace admission.
