This stepped well (baoli) is one of the most beautiful and least visited monuments in the Jaipur area — a geometric descent of stone steps and arched galleries carved in warm sandstone, sitting directly below the walls of Amber Fort. Despite being a few hundred meters from one of India's most photographed buildings, Panna Mian ka Kund receives a fraction of the visitors.
The stepwell was designed for year-round access to water even as the water table rose and fell with the seasons. The steps descend in diminishing rectangular terraces, flanked by arched niches and galleries, giving the whole structure a satisfying geometric rhythm when viewed from above. Unlike some stepwells, this one still holds water at the lowest level and has a quiet, slightly mysterious atmosphere.
Combine it with a visit to Amber Fort next door. The stepwell entrance is free (though you may need to ask directions from locals near the fort parking area). It is rarely crowded even at peak times.
