Batu Karas

Small south Java fishing village with a mellow beginner-friendly surf break.

Batu Karas is a small fishing village on the south coast of Java, about an hour by road from Pangandaran. It is best known for its gentle right-hand surf break, which has made it one of Indonesia's easier places to learn without the intensity of Bali or the heavy reef waves elsewhere in the archipelago.

The village is simple and low-key: warungs by the beach, surfboard rentals, guesthouses, fishing boats, and black-sand coves backed by palms. It is not a place for nightlife or polished resort comfort. Come for slow days, early surf sessions, and evenings that end with food by the beach.

The wave is also the catch. Batu Karas is popular with beginners, and the main break can get crowded when conditions are good. More experienced surfers may find it too soft, though the surrounding coast has stronger breaks if you know where to look.

Beyond the beach, the best outing is Green Canyon, where boats run up a narrow green river through jungle and rock walls. It is an easy half-day trip from the village.

Things to Do

Batu Karas is built around the beach and the surf. Most travellers spend their days between the main break, quiet black-sand stretches nearby, and short trips inland to the river gorges around Cijulang.
