Tasikmalaya

Sundanese city in East Parahyangan, framed by Galunggung volcano and traditional craft villages.

Tasikmalaya, usually shortened to Tasik, is a Sundanese city in southeastern West Java. It is big enough to feel busy, but its best travel reasons sit around the edge: Mount Galunggung, the traditional village of Kampung Naga, and the lakes and craft districts that give the regency more character than a first glance at the city suggests.

This is not a soft landing like Bandung. Traffic is rougher, English is scarcer, and the sights take a bit of effort. But a traveler already crossing West Java gets a real sense of Sundanese rural life here, especially in the villages where houses, rice fields, and craft workshops still sit close together.

The city is also known for embroidery, umbrellas, woodwork, and nasi tutug oncom, the local rice dish mixed with fermented soybean cake. Treat Tasikmalaya as a practical base: sleep in town, then use the day for Galunggung's crater, Kampung Naga's traditional houses, or a slower circuit through Situ Gede and the craft villages.
