Pulau Kaget

Pulau Kaget is a small uninhabited island in the Barito River about thirty kilometres downstream of Banjarmasin, designated as a nature reserve to protect a wild population of proboscis monkeys. The journey down the river is a long half-day from the city.

Boats approach the island in the late afternoon when the monkeys come down to the waterside trees to feed and roost. Land access to the reserve itself is restricted but the river circuit gives close views. The trip is usually arranged with a private operator from Banjarmasin or through a hotel; the speedboats from Jalan Pos can be chartered by the day.

A story
The proboscis monkey — bekantan in Indonesian, the symbol of South Kalimantan and the mascot of Banjarmasin — is endemic to Borneo and endangered across most of its range. Pulau Kaget is one of the easiest places to see them in the wild, particularly at dusk when family groups gather in the riverside trees to sleep.
